Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) ventures to find new sources for e-commerce

Facebook Inc(NASDAQ:FB), the social networking site may be very popular amongst its users, but it does no incite the same sentiment from its investors. Since the May IPO, the shareholders have been very worried about what the company is going to do to sustain its level of growth. The advertisers have been pulling out because they find their ads to be ineffective on the site which is increasingly being used through smartphones, which do not let users look at advertisements a lot. Facebook is going to have to come up with new sources of revenue generation to keep the investors happy, and also to make sure that they do not sink anytime soon.

The site’s main income sources were the advertisers as well as games partner, Zynga. However, with the advertisers drawing out of their respective deals, facebook has decided to explore other sources of revenue through e-commerce. The idea of the “Collections” is one such attempt to earn money, by Facebook. After having tested various features, the site has some up with this one, through which the retailers can share the products which they have to offer, on the site itself. Users can browse through different kinds of products, and they can pick and buy whatever they want to. The site is currently trying to test the product for its viability, and if the feature catches on, then it will become a permanent part of the various features which the site offers.

Facebook users can look at the various products, and through the use of “Collections”, they can share with their friends as well. Seven retail names have currently been chosen for the initial part of the feature. The users who get to see the collection of products may “like” them, they may “want” them, or, they may “collect” them. Whatever option the user picks will become visible in his/her timeline, and through that, their friends will also get to see the users’ activities on “Collections”. The mechanism is very similar to that of Pinterest. Facebook is going to start off with the seven major names: Victoria’s Secret, Wayfair, Michael Kors, pottery Barn, Smith Optics and Fab.com, along with Neiman Marcus.

Survey: Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) Mobile Sponsored Stories Are Working, Promoted Posts Are Failing

Facebook Inc(NASDAQ:FB) has been successful in maintaining the reliability of its user experience while increasing advertising revenue at the same time through its mobile sponsored stories. However, as per the results of a survey involving more than 750 Facebook users in the US last week, conducted by Sterne Agee, the social networking site’s test of promoted posts is a bust.

Sterne Agee has found that 77% of respondents had not taken note of mobile ads. This means that Facebook’s goal of keeping its mobile sponsored stories subtle and having them merge in to mobile news feed is being met.

Sterne Agee has also found that 54% of the respondents have seen more ads on Facebook in comparison to the situation that was 6 months back. 42% people said that the number of ads was unchanged and 4% said that they were noticing less number of ads.

Sterne Agee’s survey revealed that 61% of respondents felt that the relevance of ads they were coming across was unchanged as it was 6 months back. 22% people said that the relevance had reduced and 17% felt that they were coming across more relevant adverts.

16% people wanted to pay for promoting their posts on Facebook. 45% of people were willing to give Facebook Gifts a shot. 47% of respondents seemed willing to try Facebook search engine. 63% of laptop and desktop users were found to have accessed Facebook once or more each day.

Nearly half the respondents said that they spend the same amount of time they used to spend on Facebook 6 months back. 61% of respondents said that they access Facebook through their mobile phones. 71% women respondents said that they use mobile Facebook apps once or more each day.

Sterne Agee concluded after the survey that the near-term outlook on Facebook still is cloudy, under the present circumstances of transitioning into mobile. He believes that long term opportunities are large. User experience is relatively unaltered, in comparison to what is was like 6 months ago.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB): Allows Users To Put Emoticons In Comments, All Eyes On Earnings Now

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is always doing some change or the other to ensure a better user experience. The recent news is that the social networking site now allows emoticons to show up as their proper symbols on comments.

These emoticons would not work on status updates or any other posts. There are plenty of symbols that the user can use to insert various emoticons as well as images of animals. For example, to insert a thumbs-up symbol, user needs to type (y), for a smiling emoticon, one needs to type :) and for a sad emoticon, one needs to type :(. The list goes on.

These emoticons were already available in Facebook messages and chats. The feature has now been added to comments. It goes without saying that we will be seeing more of these emoticons now.

Hence, it would not be just a matter of text now. Emoticons will have as much importance. Some users may feel that emoticons are distracting and may be inappropriate to use them on fan pages or while interacting with co-workers and professionals.

As of now, Facebook has not enabled emoticons in its native iOS application, mobile website and Android app.

In other news, Facebook is reportedly facing the acid test of updating its results for the September quarter. The focus is going to be on the figures, revenues and earnings, to be precise. Alarm bells, however, have started to ring.

Many analysts have lowered their estimates of the social networking site’s income for 2013. No one seems to have raised their predictions.

Although Mark Zuckerberg has been making positive statements in September that the month has been working seriously towards translating its member base into advertisement revenues, there has not been much confidence about the company’s earnings in the upcoming term. Facebook is supposed to announce its results on 23rdOctober.

Shares of FB are up 0.42% at $19.59.
