Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK): Windows Phones Come at Extremely Low Costs – Will Users Make the Transition to these Phones?

How will Windows Phone gain potential customers in a smartphone market brimming with competition? The answer is simple – via their prices. Windows Phone 8 handsets, the top-tier ones will start from $100 along with a contract. On Tuesday, AT&T Inc.(NYSE:T) stated that Nokia Corporation (ADR)(NYSE:NOK) Lumia 920 will be available for $100 with a 2-year contract, the Lumia 820 for $50 and the HTC 8X starting at $100.

The Nokia Lumia 920 will be especially available through AT&T at their unveiling. The 32GB phone can be pre-ordered from November 7 and will hit the shelves a couple of days later. As mentioned above, users need to pay only $100 for a 2-year contract. When compared to Apple’s iPhone 5 and other high-end Android devices, the cost of Lumia 920 is definitely more reasonable and can tip the scales in its favor. The model comes in five colors - black, yellow, cyan, red and white and AT&T is also offering a wireless charging plate free of cost, till stocks last.

AT&T will also have the mid-tier Lumia 820 from November 9 priced at $50 for a 2-year contract. Verizon is exclusively selling the Lumia 822, with more or less the same features, for $100 with a $50 mail-in rebate and 2-year contract. The HTC Windows Phone 8X will cost $100 for the 8GB model (colors blue and yellow) and $200 for the 16GB (only blue) that will be available on AT&T with a 2-year contract.

The HTC 8X and Lumia 920 have been favorably reviewed by the technology press and can give reasonable competition to iPhone and Android-powered devices as well when it comes to specifications. But the market share commanded by Windows Phone is still low, which is why the prices are being subsidized in order to attract users.

In the United States, where Nokia is determined to make its mark, the company has tied up with other network carriers as well such as Verizon and T-Mobile.

Each of the network carriers will be selling custom-made versions of the phone will which were unveiled publicly on September 5.

Breaking into the U.S. market is critical for any handset maker and all the more so for Nokia, which has been struggling with dwindling sales. The U.S. is the largest market in the world for mobiles and success there would translate into positive consumer sentiment in other markets as well.

The release of the smartphones by Nokia have been delayed as its software partner Microsoft was not ready with the operating system Windows Phone 8, that was released only late last month.

In partnership with Microsoft, Nokia is making an all-out effort to regain some of the ground and the market share that it has lost to companies such as Apple and Samsung, which have powered ahead in the mobile market, especially in the smartphone segment.

Those who have compared Nokia's Lumia 920 with Apple's iPhone 5 feel that the Nokia phone is definitely a superior product.

Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) Lumia 830 Leaked, AT&T Offers Nokia Lumia 920 For $99

Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) Lumia 830 Leaked, AT&T Offers Nokia Lumia 920 For $99
As the reports reveal, Nokia Corporation (ADR)(NYSE:NOK) has another Windows phone lined up. The Nokia Lumia 830 will confusingly be a lower-end handset, when compared to the Lumia 820.

The Lumia 920 is definitely the successor to the Lumia 900. However, the Lumia 820 is the updated Lumia 800. That makes the Lumia 830 the sequel to the Lumia 710 from last year.

The Nokia Lumia 830 is supposed to come in 5 different colors. Unfortunately, there has been no more information regarding its insides. Also, there has been no divulgence regarding the date of release.

In other news, AT&T is offering the flagship smartphone from Nokia, the Lumia 920 for $99 and the Nokia Lumia 820 for $49.99 to people, who are willing to agree on a 2-year contract.

The cost of the Lumia 920 that is powered by the Windows 8 operating system of Microsoft is cheaper than its competitors. Samsung’s Galaxy Note II is being offered at $299 and Apple’s iPhone 5 is being offered at $199 from AT&T on a two-year contract.

EVP for Nokia’s Global sales and Marketing division, Chris Weber explained that the price offering for the Nokia Lumia 920 is lower than expectations since AT&T decided to finance some of the expenses so as to persuade more consumers to subscribe to its network and commit on a 2-year contract. Weber said that carrier subsidies are always a decision that is taken by the mobile carrier, but they help bringing a product to an exceptionally compelling price point.

AT&T also boosted the competitiveness of the Nokia Lumia 920 by offering the wireless charging pad free of cost to customers, who will buy the product early. The offer will be available for a short span of time.  An analyst from Current analysis, Avi Greengart said that Nokia is more focused on selling a large amount of its smartphones to set up a customer base and amplify its market stock rather than generating higher profit.

Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) Relies On Windows 8 To Prove Lucky

When Microsoft Corporation(NASDAQ:MSFT) takes the curtains off the Windows 8 operating system for mobile phones on Monday, there will be a particular company hoping it can deliver the guaranteed transition for uses and fans of Windows tablets and PCs. Yes. Nokia it is.

For handset manufacturer Nokia Corporation (ADR)(NYSE:NOK), the new version of the operating system would represent the latest and potentially the last chance to find its way back into the growing smartphone industry.

The once overriding Finnish handset maker saw its fortunes decline drastically when initial iterations of Windows software for smartphones did not receive wide embrace. Also, Nokia had done away with its own operating system to favour the solution proposed by Microsoft.

Windows phone cover for a mere 4% of the smartphone market, having struggled to compete with Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. As a consequence, Nokia got pushed out of the top 5 smartphone manufacturers in the third quarter of the year 2012. It is the first time that Nokia has not shown up in the rankings since researchers started compiling them in 2004.

Nokia and Microsoft are likely to avoid direct rivalry for their Windows 8 release this week. A spoiler event showcasing the latest Android devices from Google was cancelled due to anticipation of Hurricane Sandy in the New York City.

This is not the only timing issue to weigh down the Windows phone partners. Mobile operators have been complaining for being having to wait for over a month to sell Windows phones.

Nokia’s flagship Lumia 920 was released in the US at a lavish New York event sometime in early September. However, the first handset to operate on Windows 8 is not expected before a couple of weeks. It will only be available through one operator AT&T.

Nokia Corporation Gains Another 6% - NOK, NEWP, CLWR, VRSN

Nokia Corporation (ADR)(NYSE:NOK) shares continued to recover from its recent slump and the stock gained for the second consecutive session. The stock is now up 6% at $2.83 after surging about 5% in yesterday’s session.

The company has been suffering from hard times as it has lost its glory amid heavy competition from top three market rulers  in the smartphone industry- iOS, Andrioid, and Windows Phone. At least for now, the company has shown some sort of bounce back from its recently launched Lumia 920, which would be availableonly on AT&T carrier in US.

Although, the recently launched Lumia models have gained positive reviews, it would be premature to conclude anything. We will know everything once the company’s announce some sort of shipment details later this year.

Also, Rogers has announced that it will be the first carrier to sell the Nokia’s Lumia 920.  John Bynton, Rogers’ Chief Marketing Officer has said that the phone will be available on the shelves of its few select stores soon.  The company has priced to the phone at $99.99 for a 3 year period and $549.99 for a month to month plan.  Currently, the phone is available only in black.

Newport Corporation(NASDAQ:NEWP) is having a solid session as the stock popped up 17% after its Q3 earnings beat EPS estimates late yesterday. Investors are encouraged as the company continues to deliver on the bottom line growth, despite elusive revenue. Additionally, the company also said it is ahead of schedule in its plan to achieve annualized cost savings of $15M.

Clearwire Corporation(NASDAQ:CLWR) is gaining some ground after the recent correction as Mount Kellett Capital, which owns 7.3% of the carrier, issues a letter voicing concerns about Sprint Nextel Corporation(NYSE:S)’s Eagle River share purchase, which leaves it with a majority stake and board control, and the potential for a conflict of interests. Mount Kellett wants Clearwire to "sell a substantial portion of the Company's excess spectrum," something Sprint may not be keen on doing.

Verisign, Inc.(NASDAQ:VRSN) also added 14% to $42.27 after announcing it has agreed to an amendment of the '06 Cooperative Agreement it signed with the Commerce Department. The amendment states Verisign won't renew its deal to run the .com domain name registry without the department's approval, but also states there's an "expectancy of renewal." Verisign adds it believes the DOJ has "substantially concluded its own review process" - shares had sold off on worries about the DOJ/DOC reviews.

Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) announces new phone based on a slightly older operating system

Despite the fact that Nokia Corporation (ADR)(NYSE:NOK) was hooping for the Window 8 operating system to give it the necessary push it required in terms of sales and subsequent market shares, the company will be releasing a phone from the Lumia series, which is to be based on the Windows 7.5 operating system.
This phone, according to the company, is to be an entry-level one, as far as their new range of smartphones go. The company, however, cleared doubts by stating that the reason they used this older version of the Windows Phone operating system was because the newest version demands high specifications, which cannot always be met, when people are asking for affordable phones at the same time.

The phone released on the Windows 7.5 version, the Lumia 510, does not have bad specifications. The phone seems to be a good one, with solid specs. The smartphone will have a 4 inch screen, and the resolution of the screen will be 800*480 pixels. The phone will be available with 4 GB provided to the user, and the RAM stands at 256 MB. It will have a Snapdragon S1 processor, and users can opt for the free cloud-based storage provided by Skydrive, worth about 7 GB. The phone is endowed with a 5 mega-pixel camera, and the cover is available in a range of bright, pop colors, such as red, white, black and cyan. These colors will be available at the launch itself.

The phone will have good software features in it, as well. The Windows platform will be providing the user with many applications, so that the user is left spoilt for choice. The native features which are a must-have in smartphones, such as Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps, as well as Nokia Transport, will already be installed into the phone. Plus, there are the extra features for the camera, which will allow users to take better pictures.

This phone, however, is not being launched in the U.S or Europe, anytime soon. So far the company has voiced its intentions of taking the Lumia 510 to India, China, South America, and some Asia-Pacific countries.
