Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Chairman Expresses Frustration with Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and its Patent Wars

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Chairman Eric Schmidt on Thursday had quite a bit to say about Apple Inc.(NASDAQ:AAPL)’s penchant for filing legal suits against rivals to protect its intellectual property rights.

In a news conference to launch Google's Nexus 7 tablet, Schmidt made it apparent that he was against patent wars in the mobile industry and expressed his frustration with Apple and its recent rash of legal suits against companies which run on Google's Android operating system.

"Literally patent wars prevent choice, prevent innovation and I think that is very bad. We are obviously working through that and trying to make sure we stay on the right side of these issues. So ultimately Google stands for innovation as opposed to patent wars," Schmidt said, according to the Korean Times which reported on the event.

Samsung, which is one of the biggest users of Android, is engaged in a bitter battle with Apple over patent infringements and the Korean handset maker faces the prospect of a ban on the sale of its products in the United States if Apple has its way.

In an obvious reference to that, Schmidt said, ""I think one of the worst things that happened in the last few years has been the belief that somehow there are so many patents in the mobile phone world, an estimated 200,000 that are overlapping and complicated and so forth, that one vendor can stop the sale of another vendor's phones or devices."

When asked if Google would support the equipment makers it partners with, he said, "all I want to say publicly (is that) we fully intend to support the ecosystem as it evolves. The Android ecosystem is really central, in my view, to the successful moving forward of the market."

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) fell out over voice-based navigation feature

There has been a lot of speculation over why Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) decided to part ways over Google Maps - or more specifically why did Apple decide to junk Google Maps for its own navigational application that as obviously an inferior product.

According to All Things Digital, the main bone of contention between the two companies with regard to the mapping application was over a feature that provided voice-enabled turn-by-turn driving directions in Google maps.

Google has been offering this feature free to users of its Android operating system. However, this was not part of the application that was on Apple's iOS, while Apple wanted this feature.

The reasoning is that Apple felt that it was at a disadvantage compare to Android handsets since users of Google's Android-powered devices had this additional functionality.

It did not sit well with the Cupertino tech giant that the company which it had chosen to provide it mapping feature also happened to be its rival in the mobile phone space and was "calling the shots on functionality important to the iOS maps feature set."
Apple is a company which has a very tight control over its ecosystem and the companies that it partners with. It likes to have total control over the products and features that are available on its mobile devices. But in this particular instance, it was Google which had the upper hand.

What has made it worse is that Google Maps is obviously a superior product to anything else that is available in the market.

All things Digital commented, "Apple pushed Google hard to provide the data it needed to bring voice-guided navigation to iOS. But according to people familiar with Google’s thinking, the search giant, which had invested massive sums in creating that data and views it as a key feature of Android, wasn’t willing to simply hand it over to a competing platform."

The report speculate that Apple was most likely to be the topic of conversation between the two companies since Apple's most virulent cases have been reserved for Samsung, which it has alleged has been copying the designs of its mobile devices.

In a recent trial between Apple and Samsung in a federal court in San Jose in the United States, the court ruled in favour of the Cupertino company and awarded it a billion dollars in damages saying that the Korean firm had copied its designs and infringed on its patents.

The late Steve Jobs had gone on record to his biographer to say that Android was a copycat product.
Google has so far downplayed the disputes between Apple and Samsung saying that the patents under dispute did not relate to the core Android operating system.

Apple hasn’t ever directly attacked Google anywhere but the entire tech world is aware that these legal disputes between Apple and Android devices are a proxy war between the iPhone maker and the Internet search giant.

Google's Android is the most-used operating system in the world and the main rival to Apple's iOS.

Why is Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Stock Soaring? Let us Find Out

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s graph in context with its stock price keeps shooting up and up. It has climbed more than 30% after July, when it was priced at $560. Speculations and theories are all over the place about the company’s astonishing performance, but many have stated that Google’s financial performance is the main reason for the surge in its stock price.

How Should Investors Trade GOOG Now? Find Out Here

Other reasons for the soaring stock are:

a. Google is still No.1 when it comes to advertising and Facebook is nowhere close to it. Its search business is on the rise like never before.

b. Google is making profits hand over fist while cutting into Apple’s revenue.

c. Motorola is not a catastrophe as expected.

d. Android is grabbing market shares at others’ expense. Google’s new tablet has garnered good response and Android-based phones are equally good when compared to Apple phones.

e. The company is coming up with innovative and brilliant strategies under the tutelage of founder and new CEO Larry Page.

Over the last 5 years, the cash flow at Google has grown at a tremendous rate, far surpassing all expectations. Back in 2007, the cash flow was $3billion and the stock traded for $700 for the very first time. According to calculations, the amount this year should be around $12 billion if not more. The achievement is commendable as Google continues to experiment by investing in self-driving cars and wind power, which have no relation to its core business.
