Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) engineers are second to Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) in salaries

Facebook Inc(NASDAQ:FB)’s engineers are paid just a tad lesser than Google Inc(NASDAQ:GOOG)’s engineers according to a survey which covered 15 tech companies in terms of average base salary.

The survey was done by social jobs and career community company Glassdoor and Google topped the chart for 2012 at $128,336, with Facebook coming in second, at $123,626. The companies’ respective averages for 2011 were $114,596 and $107,744.

The national average for base salary was $92,648 and both companies were ranked well above this average, which was computed using more than 5,000 anonymous salary reports.

In fact, of the 15 tech companies surveyed, 13 were paying their engineers well above the national average.

Glassdoor which spoke to Facebook employees on condition of anonymity said that the engineers felt that their jobs with the company offered `amazing perks, job opportunities, co-workers, and compensation (in the tech industry), extremely high levels of autonomy and work flexibility.

Facebook has been under a lot of pressure to raise its revenues and profitability, while advertisers and marketers want the company to do more in terms of monetising its huge base of subscribers who have migrated to mobile devices.

In a rare appearance in San Francisco last month, founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said that the company was aware of the need to shift to the mobile platform in terms of its ads and it was setting in motion its plans for that.

However he did not provide much clarty on what that strategy was. Since then, the company has been unveiling more features on its site designed to garner revenues such as Gifts and Promoted posts.
