Intel Corporation (INTC) Working On 48 Core Chip For Tablets And Smartphones

There are reports that Intel Corporation(NASDAQ:INTC) researchers are working on a 48 core processor for tablets and smartphones. However, it may take 5-10 years before it hits the market.

An analyst with Moor Insights and Strategy, Patrick Moorhead said that if the technology is available in the next 5-10 years, then it will be possible to accomplish many tasks that consume a lot of processing power in today’s world. Moorhead feels that the technology could diversify the concept of a computer.

A research analyst at Intel labs in Barcelona, Enric Herrero said that the lab is working on discovering new ways to use and handle several cores in mobile gadgets.

A host of small mobile devices incorporate multi-core chips in present times. But such multi-core chips may be quad-core or dual-core CPUs working with a number of GPUs. Having a 48-core chip within a small mobile device can open up a plethora of opportunities.

Researchers are working to find out the best way to use so many cores into a single device. Herrero told ComputerWorld that usually a processor with one core is sufficient in accomplishing tasks one after another. With multiple cores, they can simply split the tasks among themselves.

He also explained that with the help of multiple cores, someone could encrypt an email while working on other power-intensive applications simultaneously. The operations are likely to stretch since they would have to share resources.

Another Intel research scientist, Tanausu Ramirez is working on the 48-core chip. He said that if someone was watching a HD video, a 48-core chip could use different cores to decipher different video frames simultaneously, delivering a more seamless video watching experience to the user.

An analyst at Enderle Group, Rob Enderle said that having different device functionalities and applications operating on their own cores would translate into a great progress.
