General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) to recall more than 38K cop cars

General Motors Company(NYSE:GM) has issued a recall for more than 38,000 Chevrolet Impalas, used by cops in the United States and Canada, due to a problem with the front lower control arms that support the wheel's vehicles.

The recall affects models made from 2008 through 2012 at its factory in Oshawa, Ontario the company said in a posting on Saturday on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. A faulty lower control arm in the front suspension could crack and cause the driver to lose control and crash the car, it said.

The U.S. automobile company has offered to fix, free of charge both front control arms, the company said.

Non-police Chevys for the relevant years were not affected by the safety recall it added.

Earlier this week it had issued a recall of 1,713 cop sedans in Canada and has now followed it up with the recall of 36,413 Impala police cruisers in the U.S.

The company said that till now n accidents had been reported related to this issue and it would soon start sending out notices to owners on this defect.

GM officials got to know of the problem after several police fleets reported earlier this year that the lower control arms had cracked near a bushing sleeve. The company start to probe the issue in February and managed to identify the problem in July.

Meanwhile Japan's Mitsubishi also issued a recall for a small number of i-MEVs made between November 2011 and December 2012, due to faulty airbag sensors. 

The airbag sensors may not be compatible with self-diagnostic software leading to deactivation of the front and side airbags, and failing to deploy during a collision, the company said.
