Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) Falls As Analysts Doubt About Clear Benefit After Apple’s Win

The aftermath of Apple Inc.(NASDAQ:AAPL)’s winover Samsung in a patent infringement lawsuit is having a deep impact on numerous players in the technology market. Shares of Nokia Corporation (ADR)(NYSE:NOK)) declined by 6.77% to $3.03 whereas Research in Motion (RIMM) experienced an increase of 0.7% at a figure of $7.12. Some analysts have predicted that consumer interest in Nokia phones using Microsoft‘s Windows Phone software and RIMM’s soon to be released BB10 upgrade to its Blackberry software, will increase due to Google’s brainchild Android, being affected by Samsung’s loss in the court case.

Chris Burns of Verge has stated that both Nokia and Microsoft will most likely organize an event in New York on the 8th of September where the Windows Phone 8, the latest version of the Windows Phone along with the newest batch of Nokia Lumia phones using the software will be unveiled. Mark Sue of RBC Capital Markets, who has a Hold rating on shares of Nokia, has said that the company will benefit enormously from the verdict in favor of Apple. Its partnership with Microsoft will give it a boost as both companies have already acquired enough mobile patents to secure themselves from legal hassles.

However, all analysts don’t share the same opinion. Berenberg Bank’s Adnaan Aamad only sees Microsoft’s Windows Phone having lucrative future prospects. He has stated that Microsoft ecosystem for smartphones is different as compared to others, which is its USP. Hardware manufacturers associated with Android are clueless and anxious as to how their sales figures will be affected.

Aamad is not too sure about Nokia reaping benefits, given that its stock is plummeting and he fears that its association with Microsoft due to the Windows 8 software might not help much. MKM Partners’ Mike Genovese, with a Sell rating on Nokia shares, expressed similar views by stating that Apple’s win is over-hyped when it comes to Google facing losses and Nokia and RIMM coming out on top. He feels that iPhones and Android will always have an edge over Windows and Blackberry phones.
