Samsung Tops Nokia (NYSE:NOK) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) in Mobile Market Shares

Research reports from Gartner clearly show that Samsung Electronics has surpassed its competitor Nokia Corporation (ADR)(NYSE:NOK) in the 2^ndquarter in terms of market shares. In the 1^st quarter, Samsung had a share of 20.7% in the market, whereas now the figure stands at 21.6% after selling 90.43 million mobile handsets.

Nokia too has shown a slight increase from a 19.8% market share in the 1^stquarter to 19.9% in the 2^nd, but it has experienced a significant drop from 22.8% during the same time a year back. Android-running Galaxy smartphones, especially the Galaxy S3 handset, has contributed enormously to its huge market share. According to Gartner, Nokia's Windows-running Lumia devices are desperately trying to tighten their holds in the minds of customers so that they switch over to Nokia.

Apple Inc.(NASDAQ:AAPL) has managed to increase its shares to 6.9% in the 2^nd quarter from 4.6% a year back. Apple has been affected by its own popularity because consumers are eagerly awaiting the launch of iPhone 5 (expected in the fall), which has created quite a buzz, thus leading to the lessening of demand for the current iPhone. The mobile device market has experienced a drop in sales - 2.3% year-on-year in the quarter to 419 million units for the simple reason that users are waiting for hi-tech devices that are going to be launched in the 3^rd or last quarter of this year.

Smartphones running Google's Android operating system dominated 64.1% of the 154 million smarphones that were sold in the 2^ndquarter. Although there is a slight decrease, the sales have gone up when compared to the same time last year, by 42.7%. Apple's iOS platform comes second, occupying 18.8% of the sales. Microsoft’s Windows Phone smartphone market share almost doubled to 2.7%, but it is still way behind iOS and Android.
